Child & Adolescent Counselling

"TYW, we believe every young person deserves to feel safe, heard and understood, just as they are."

Growing Up Can Be Complex. Support Can Help.

At TYW, counselling is not about “fixing” a child. It’s about understanding them.

Our approach is gentle, playful when it helps, and always shaped around the child or teen in front of us. Childhood and adolescence bring so much change. Friendships, school, family life, identity, emotions and growing bodies can all feel like a lot at once, and young people don’t always have the words to explain what’s going on. At Treat Yourself Well, we recognise that every child and teen experiences the world

differently. Our psychologists take a compassionate, trauma-informed and neuroaffirming approach, working at a pace that feels safe and tailoring support to each young person’s age, needs and way of communicating. Reaching out for support isn’t a sign that something has gone wrong. Often, it’s a sign of a family that cares deeply and wants their young person to feel more supported.

Big Feelings &
Emotional Regulation

Helping young people understand their emotions and find ways to navigate intense feelings with care.

School &

ADHD &
Autism

Neuroaffirming support that celebrates different ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world.

Identity &
Self-Esteem

A safe space to explore identity, gender, sexuality, self-worth, and who they are becoming.

Eating Concerns
& Body Image

Compassionate, weight-neutral support for eating disorders, body image worries, and food relationships.

Family Change &
Difficult Experiences

Support through separation, grief, trauma, moving, and other life changes that can feel unsettling.

Evidence-Based Support for Young People

Every young person is unique, which is why we tailor our approach to their age, developmental stage, strengths and goals. Our psychologists draw on evidence-based therapies, adapted to feel engaging and accessible for children and teens.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • CBT helps young people notice the links between their thoughts, feelings and actions. Through practical, age-appropriate strategies, they can build confidence in managing worries and difficult moments.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • DBT supports teens to understand and navigate intense emotions, build distress tolerance skills, and strengthen relationships. It can be especially helpful for young people who feel things deeply.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • ACT helps young people make room for difficult thoughts and feelings while reconnecting with what matters most to them, such as friendships, interests and the kind of person they want to be.

What is Child & Adolescent Counselling?

Our approach prioritises creating a space where young people feel safe, respected and able to be themselves. For younger children, sessions might include play, drawing or creative activities. For teens, sessions often look more like a relaxed conversation, with the young person having a real say in what they talk about.

We also recognise that parents and carers play an important role. Depending on your young person’s age and needs, we may involve you in some sessions, offer parent support sessions, or keep you updated in ways that respect your young person’s privacy and trust.

Depending on their needs and goals, counselling may involve:
  • Understanding and naming feelings

  • Developing coping strategies that work for them

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Navigating friendships and relationships

  • Processing difficult experiences

  • Exploring identity and self-understanding
