What Does It Really Mean to Be Healthy?

When most people think about health, they think about eating well, exercising regularly, sleeping enough, and avoiding illness. While these things can certainly support wellbeing, health is often far more complex than a checklist of behaviours.

At Treat Yourself Well, we believe health isn't simply the absence of illness, distress or difficulty. Nor is it about achieving perfection.

Health is about having the capacity to engage with life in a meaningful, sustainable and flexible way, even when life feels challenging.

Health Is More Than Physical

Our understanding of health is often shaped by messages that tell us to eat better, move more, be more productive, optimise our routines, and continuously improve ourselves.

While these messages may be well-intentioned, they can sometimes overlook an important reality:

Human beings are not machines to be optimised.

We are complex individuals shaped by our relationships, experiences, identities, culture, environment, values and nervous systems.

Health is not something that exists separately from the contexts in which we live.

Health Looks Different for Everyone

There is no single definition of what a healthy life looks like.

For one person, health may mean learning to set boundaries and avoid burnout.

For another, it may mean reconnecting with their body after years of struggling with an eating disorder.

For someone living with chronic illness, disability, neurodivergence, trauma or mental health challenges, health may involve finding ways to live a meaningful life alongside ongoing difficulties rather than eliminating them completely.

This is why we believe a one-size-fits-all approach to health rarely works.

The Difference Between Health and Perfection

Many people spend years pursuing the idea of being healthy.

Sometimes this can become exhausting.

Health can begin to feel like:

  • Constant self-monitoring

  • Following rigid rules

  • Feeling guilty when we rest

  • Trying to optimise every aspect of life

  • Believing we are never doing enough

Ironically, the pursuit of perfect health can sometimes move us further away from wellbeing.

When health becomes rigid, fear-driven or all-consuming, it may begin to limit rather than enhance our lives.

What We Believe Health Includes

At Treat Yourself Well, we see health as involving:

  • Flexibility rather than rigidity

  • Connection rather than isolation

  • Self-compassion rather than self-criticism

  • Meaning and purpose

  • Supportive relationships

  • Emotional awareness

  • Rest and recovery

  • Respect for individual differences

  • The ability to adapt to life's challenges

Health is not about feeling good all the time.

It is about having the resources, support and capacity to navigate difficult experiences while remaining connected to what matters most.

A More Compassionate Definition of Health

Perhaps health is not about creating a perfect life.

Perhaps it is about developing a sustainable relationship with ourselves.

A relationship that allows room for joy, rest, growth, imperfection, challenge, connection and change.

Because being healthy is not about becoming the best version of yourself.

Health is not measured by perfection. It is reflected in our capacity for flexibility, connection, meaning, self-compassion and engagement in life.

It is about learning how to care for yourself as the person you already are.
